Pet names can be traditional, quirky, funny, or even delightfully bizarre (we’re thinking of you, Shinbone).
How did you pick your pet’s name?
Did you deliberate for weeks or go with your first instinct? Did you have a name in mind when you brought the new pet home, or did you wait and choose one that reflected their personality and temperament — as well as your own?
However you decided, odds are you picked an uncommon name for your pet. Of the tens of thousands of names we sampled in 2018, the most popular ones only made up about 1% of the total list. That leaves a lot of original names. And most of them are the only entry for that name on the list.
Unusual and creative pet names
We also learned something else while looking over our list of pet names: our customers are a creative and humorous bunch. In 2018, we created pet tags for Astro, Zoser, Obi Wan, Wasabi, and Spam. And don’t forget Parsnip, Habanero, or Bynx. And we’re as shocked as you are that Skimble didn’t make top 25 of the most popular list.
Another pet tag simply reads: “Hi, I’m Lunchbox.” (You know there’s a good story behind that name.) And another favorite from last year: “Got lost prowlin’, call my Mom!”
Yes, LuckyPet customers score high for originality.
And though we don’t separate our list of names by gender, it’s interesting to note that of the top 25 most common pet names, 18 are normally considered female names. Does that mean girl pets are more likely to get pet tags? Hard to say. Besides, when we expand the list to the top 50 most common names, 20 of those are traditional male monikers, 26 are female, and the remaining four could work either way.
We also don’t separate our list by animal type, but we do get lots of pet pictures from customers, so we know our tags are worn by a wide variety of creatures of all shapes and sizes. And while some names give a clue to the type of animal — Albus Dumbledog for example — others are less clear. Any guesses on what Jupiter Ascending looks like?
